DR. DEBORAH Z. BAIN
MD, FAAP, FMCP (formerly IFMCP), ABOIM, ABIHM, CEDH-C
Dr. Deborah Z. Bain is a board-certified physician, integrative medicine pioneer, and the medical partner behind the physician-supervised protocols at Pillars of Wellness. A practicing physician for over 30 years in the Dallas–Fort Worth area, Dr. Bain brings a level of medical credentialing to this practice that is virtually unmatched in the region — including a distinction that belongs to her alone: she is the first pediatrician in the United States to achieve full certification through the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM).
Her path to functional and integrative medicine was not theoretical — it was personal. During a demanding career in conventional medicine, Dr. Bain suffered nine neck and back surgeries in her 30s, followed by a stage 3B breast cancer diagnosis at age 39. The standard protocols that stabilized her disease left her body severely depleted — nutrient deficient, toxic overloaded, and searching for answers the conventional system couldn’t provide. It was during that search that she encountered Dr. Matt Chalmers, and the collaboration that would reshape both of their practices began. That story is told in her book, How the Chiropractor Saved My Life: My Journey to Wellness and Beyond — a first-person account of what happens when a physician becomes a patient, and what she found on the other side.
She opened Healthy Kids Pediatrics Center for Health and Wellbeing in Frisco, Texas in 2006 — stepping away from a decade of traditional practice to build something different. Committed to addressing root causes rather than managing symptoms, she developed what she calls Functional Integrative Pediatrics — a model that combines conventional medicine with functional testing, nutritional intervention, and holistic care to help children not just survive, but thrive.
Her second book, Living Out of the Box: Changing the Face of Healthcare, is a guide for families navigating a medical system that too often falls short — and a call for physicians, chiropractors, and all healthcare disciplines to stop working in silos and start collaborating for patient outcomes.
Dr. Bain’s commitment to training the next generation of practitioners isn’t confined to lectures and conferences — it happens in her own office. She actively teaches and mentors new nurse practitioners as they join her practice, passing on the functional, root-cause approach she has spent more than two decades refining, so that whole-person care carries forward with every clinician she trains.
Beyond her own clinical work, Dr. Bain serves as teaching faculty for the Institute for Functional Medicine, helping train the next generation of physicians in root-cause, whole-person care — extending her impact well beyond the patients she sees in her own clinic to the families cared for by every practitioner she trains.
At Pillars of Wellness, Dr. Bain reviews and signs off on the protocols Dr. Chalmers develops, ensuring every treatment plan meets the standard of care patients deserve.
