What Is GHK-Cu?

GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring copper-binding tripeptide — three amino acids (glycine-histidine-lysine) bound to a copper ion — that your body already produces and that shows up naturally in plasma, saliva, and urine. Levels decline as you age, which is the basic reason it’s studied for skin regeneration, wound repair, and anti-inflammatory support.

Here’s the important nuance most sources skip: the strength of the evidence depends heavily on how it’s used. Topical GHK-Cu (the “copper peptide” you’ll see in skincare products) has a genuinely solid body of human clinical trial data behind it. Injectable, systemic use is a completely different evidence picture — much thinner, and still largely limited to lab and animal research.

What the Research Actually Shows

For topical use, the trial data is genuinely strong: a 2024 randomized controlled trial in women ages 40–65 using a 0.1% GHK-Cu cream for 12 weeks found a 31% reduction in wrinkles and 28% improved skin elasticity compared to placebo, with a 15.6% increase in measured collagen density. A separate study combining it with hyaluronic acid found 25% fine-line reduction and 18% better hydration after 8 weeks. It’s also been studied for post-surgical scarring, where a 0.5% gel outperformed silicone (the current standard) with 35% greater scar volume reduction. A 2025 meta-analysis pooling 7 clinical trials confirmed the wrinkle-reduction effect, though it flagged some study-quality limitations worth being upfront about.

For injectable, systemic use, there’s no comparable controlled human trial data — it remains a preclinical, research-stage question for that route specifically.

Nutrient Note

GHK-Cu is studied for its association with collagen-related gene expression — but collagen synthesis itself requires vitamin C as an enzyme cofactor, plus proline, glycine, and lysine as structural building blocks. Without adequate levels of these, the downstream collagen-formation process has limited raw material to work with, regardless of the signal being sent.

Regulatory Note

GHK-Cu is not FDA-approved as a drug for any indication. Topical GHK-Cu is widely and legally sold as a cosmetic ingredient. Injectable GHK-Cu was among the compounds removed from the FDA’s 503A Category 2 list in April 2026 (a procedural step, not an approval), with its own separate Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee review scheduled for February 2027 to determine its future compounding status.
