BPC-157, short for Body Protection Compound-157, is a lab-made chain of 15 amino acids modeled on a naturally protective sequence found in human gastric juice. It was first isolated and studied by Dr. Predrag Sikiric and colleagues at the University of Zagreb in the early 1990s. One thing that sets it apart from many peptides is that it holds up to stomach acid, which is why you may see it discussed for both injectable and oral use.
Researchers have proposed several mechanisms behind BPC-157’s effects, including activation of VEGFR2 (a receptor involved in forming new blood vessels), interaction with the nitric oxide pathway (eNOS, involved in blood flow), and shifting immune cells called macrophages toward a repair-oriented (M2) state.
The preclinical picture is large — hundreds of animal and lab studies — but it comes overwhelmingly from a single research group. Human evidence is a different story. A 2025 systematic review in the American Journal of Sports Medicine screened 544 articles on BPC-157 for orthopedic and sports-medicine use; only 1 met the criteria for a real clinical study, while the other 35 included studies were animal models. The authors were direct about it: despite BPC-157’s popularity and wide availability, human data is minimal.
A small 2025 pilot safety study (2 healthy adults, IV dosing up to 20 mg) reported no serious adverse events — an encouraging but very limited signal, not a green light on safety or effectiveness. A separate small, uncontrolled case series in patients with interstitial cystitis reported high rates of symptom improvement with bladder injections, which is promising but far from confirmatory. A larger 2015 Phase I safety study with 42 volunteers was reportedly conducted but its results were never published — a real gap in the record.

The tissue-remodeling and blood-vessel-formation pathways studied with BPC-157 rely on nutrient-dependent processes elsewhere in the body — including vitamin C, a required cofactor for the enzymes that build collagen, and amino acids such as proline, glycine, and lysine, which are the structural building blocks of collagen itself. On April 15, 2026, the FDA removed BPC-157 from its 503A Category 2 list — the category reserved for compounds considered a significant safety risk. That’s a procedural step, not an approval: BPC-157 remains not FDA-approved for any indication, and as of this writing was not yet authorized for pharmacy compounding. The FDA’s Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee met July 23–24, 2026 to evaluate whether it should be formally added to the list that would make compounding lawful, and the FDA’s own briefing documents ahead of that meeting proposed against inclusion, citing gaps in characterization, effectiveness, and safety data. A committee recommendation isn’t a final rule — formal rulemaking typically takes a year or more even after a favorable vote. In short: this compound’s legal status is still unresolved, and we’re watching for the FDA’s final determination rather than treating any single step as clearance. This is one of the most-searched questions about BPC-157, and the honest answer is: there’s no completed controlled human trial establishing that it heals tissue or speeds recovery in people. What exists is a large body of animal and lab research pointing to angiogenesis-related mechanisms, plus a handful of small, uncontrolled human pilot studies that are encouraging but far from proof. This is research context, not a claim about what BPC-157 will do for you individually.
